Ello..Ello... Is Anyone There?

I watched White Noise on DVD last night. The movie was trying to bring in a different concept on how the dead can communicate with the living. The story revolved around a man Jonathan Rivers who at first has a happy family, living with his pregnant wife and son. Of course like other thrillers, the happiness didn’t last forever. His wife went missing one day and ended up dead.

Grief stricken he was and one day a man came and told him that his wife has been trying to contact him through electronic devices, hence the term EVP came into the picture. EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomenon is a condition where the dead tried to communicate with the living through household electronic devices (this includes the radio, TV, phones bla..bla). At first you will hear static and unclear transmission. But once you transfer it to magnetic audio/video tape, you can actually hear and see blurry figure which were supposed to be dead people.

At first, I thought the movie was kinda cool but soon after, it started to drag. There was nothing much to see except Keaton too obsessed with the EVP thingy and started to contact his wife and seemed to leave behind other of-this-world business. It is ironic when an educated man (he’s an architect in this film and has his own co-firm), can immediately turn to someone who believes something so out of-this-world and superstitious at the same time.

There were of course suspense moments, when he accidentally communicate with the bad side of the dead world. The 3 figures (who I have no idea who they are until the end of the film, I presumed are criminals during their living years), who seemed to be vulgar, wicked, malicious spirits that can harm human.

To cut it short, he realized that his wife death was not an accident but was caused by a man who seemed to have been getting the ideas and instructions on how to kill the victims from these 3 bad spirits. Whenever they appear on the electronic devices, chances are someone will turn up dead.

So, he finally managed to track this guy down and was trying to save another hostage from dying but he was attacked by the 3 spirits and ended up dead himself. The last scene showed as his son was leaving his funeral, suddenly there’s a crackle on the radio and he somehow heard his dead dad’s voice and smiled to himself. Hmm weird huh? Suddenly his son is an expert in listening to EVP and bravo!! he doesn’t need a magnetic tape to do that. Well, maybe it’s just a sign to show him that his dad and mom were reunited in the dead world, and forgetting the fact that they are leaving him behind. Poor him.

The concept of EVP is an interesting theory since there has been many cases reported on how the dead called up their living loved ones or relatives. It can be a good film if they put in more details in it. The film lacked so much emotions; love, suspense and even fear. The father seemed to totally neglect his son after his wife’s death and forever asking his sister to take care of the son when they were supposed to be a loving family. And there’s so many unanswered questions like who the heck are those 3 bad spirits? Who in the world is that bad guy who goes around killing everybody and getting lesson to do it from dead spirits?

You can watch this film if you like but there’s nothing much to see. And for those who are scared to watch ghost & thriller movies, be rest assured that you can watch this one with your eyes wide open. There’s no gory figures out to scare you.

And oh, by the way, don’t take up EVP as a hobby. It is mighty expensive to buy the equipments. Not worth it if you just want to listen to some dead people saying a word or two. For all you know it might be a faulty radio transmission.

Very cool design! Useful information. Go on!
